Benefits of taking CBD: CBD vs Opioids – A Tale of Two Quarterbacks

CBD vs Opioids - A Tale of Two Quarterbacks

“To me, using opiates for aches and pains is likened to using a sledgehammer to drive a nail,” said pro athlete Todd Herremans in an interview with Tim McManus at ESPN.

Herremans spent eleven long, physically punishing seasons as an NFL offensive lineman with the Philadelphia Eagles. Now retired, Herremans has joined former Denver Quarterback Jake Plummer, retired Philadelphia Flyer Riley Cote, and a host of other active and retired professional athletes to promote the benefits of CBD (cannabidiol)as a healthy and natural alternative to traditional opiate and opioid pain-killers. The organization they’ve formed is A4C, AthletesForCare.org.

Jim Plunkett’s Story – Opioids and Pain After Football

A4C is trying to open the door for healthy CBD therapy in order to avoid sad stories like that of Jim Plunkett. The number 1 draft pick, Heisman Trophy winner, and two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback with the Oakland Raiders, also played for the New England Patriots. Plunkett had the misfortune of playing on some bad teams early in his NFL career, a period when he took many punishing hits, week after week, for several seasons.

Now at age 69, Jim Plunkett has had eighteen surgeries and was left with artificial knees, back injuries, and a shoulder replacement. Plunkett is in constant pain even though he takes an incredible thirteen pain-killing pills per day. “My life sucks,” says Plunkett, quoted in this article at Yahoo Sports, by Frank Schwab.

Jake Plummer’s Story- CBD and Life After Football

Jake Plummer has also seen his share of surgery and injuries. Plummer on the other hand, says that he has given up opioids completely after switching to CBD derived from natural hemp oil, which he administers orally in a dose he describes as “a few drops every day.” Plunkett keeps active playing handball and says he hasn’t made any other major lifestyle changes other than adding CBD supplements.

Plummer says he feels so good after a year of his daily CBD regimen, that he actually toyed with the idea of returning to the NFL to replace Peyton Manning, as reported by Fox Sports.

The Dark Side of Opioids And Opiates

Opiates

The opiate class of pain-killers consists of codeine and morphine, both potent pain-killing derivatives of the notorious opium plant. It’s nearly common knowledge that both of these are highly addictive drugs. After WW2 and Korea, many GI’s returned with morphine addictions begun by combat medics treating battlefield injuries. Codeine was a common and potent ingredient in the days of unregulated patent medicine, addicting unsuspecting housewives and others who purchased the “snake-oil” concoctions in search of relief from pain or anxiety.

Opioids

The opioid class includes heroin, Vicodin, oxycodone, hydrocodone, Demerol, and methadone. All opioids are synthetically manufactured chemical compounds which mimic the effects of opium derived drugs. All of these man-made drugs are highly addictive. Years of experience with opioids has shown the synthetic drugs to be even more addictive than naturally derived opiates such as codeine and morphine.

Both classes, opiates and opioids, produce chemical dependency and the human body builds up a resistance known as tolerance. With dependency comes addiction. Over time constantly increased doses are required to achieve any pain-killing effect. This is why Jim Plunkett needs 13 pills just to get through the day. With increasing dosage comes the risk of a lethal overdose.

CBD- The Safe Pain Relieving Supplement

CBD works so well because our bodies already manufacture CBD compounds naturally for use by the endocannabinoid system or ECS. The ECS functions in the areas of the brain responsible for mood, sleep, and immune and healing response. The ECS also controls inflammation response to injuries or diseases.

The system can at times be overwhelmed by the stress of injury or chronic pain such as arthritis and other age-related ailments. These can cause CBD deficiency. By supplementing the ECS supply of CBD from natural hemp oil, we’re merely restoring balance.

Because CBD is already naturally occurring in the body(“endogenous” as the scientists say), we don’t have to worry about tolerances, and because it’s non-toxic and non-psychoactive, overdose or addiction are simply not possible. Our bodies have evolved naturally to utilize CBD, just as they can use other natural supplements such as vitamin C and E.

This is why Jake Plummer can maintain an active, healthy life after football with just a few drops of CBD a day.
