At Bota Hemp, we believe the best customers are the educated customers and we welcome this opportunity to help you avoid the numerous pitfalls and CBD scams which are still all too common in our young industry.

The Big 3 Rules of Thumb For CBD Consumers

In the CBD market, the Big 3 time-tested rules of thumb for consumers have never been more applicable. It’s important to bear in mind these three important rules for all consumer products in general, but especially in today’s unregulated CBD business environment:

  1. You get what you pay for. Unusually low price is a red flag for low quality. Low price means that corners have been cut on CBD extraction or hygienic bottling processes, third-party lab-testing, the hemp source crop quality or all of the above. We’ll cover this in more detail below.
  2. Let the buyer beware. When demand for a legitimate product such as CBD oil skyrockets the number of scams and bogus products also increases proportionally. We’ll talk about dubious bargain brand CBD products and why they should be avoided.
  3. If it seems “too good to be true”, it probably is. This applies particularly to those CBD email scammers who promise free trial samples, claiming that you just pay the low one-time shipping cost. Don’t be fooled! Once they have your credit card number, monthly charges up to $90 can reoccur automatically.  It can be very difficult to cancel with these shady fly-by-night operators due to deviously hidden language in the terms of service agreement which was validated when you accepted the offer. You can check out the details of these scams and a list of known CBD scammers in this article.

CBD awareness is rising quickly around the world, thanks to the numerous public endorsements from athletes, celebrities, fitness experts, yoga gurus and the enormous number of satisfied CBD consumers.

While the formal scientific CBD research is very impressive, the overwhelming amount of positive testimonials from consumers who have tried the versatile supplement and judged the results for themselves can’t be ignored either. As demand for the 21st century’s new “liquid gold” increases, so too does the number of scams and bargain basement rip-off products seeking to profit from its astounding popularity with consumers.

The CBD Research Behind the Reputation

Every day new research continues to unveil more of the amazing therapeutic potentials of CBD, which stands for cannabidiol, one of 80 cannabinoids found in the Sativa L family of plants, including the two distant Sativa cousins hemp and marijuana.

CBD from hemp is preferred for general fitness regimens because it has only the smallest trace levels of the psychoactive cannabinoid THC. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the potent psychoactive compound in marijuana which induces euphoria, or the high.

Many CBD users are seeking relief from anxiety and stress and the psychoactive properties of THC can actually worsen these conditions. CBD from hemp won’t get you high and it’s non-addictive. CBD derived from marijuana is still accompanied by significant levels of THC which can negate the beneficial effects and even make it illegal to use in many states.

Why is CBD Classified as a Supplement and Not a Drug?

The discovery of the human endocannabinoid system revealed that CBD is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. In effect, all humans (and mammals) already enjoy the benefits of naturally produced, or endogenous, CBD. Whether you take a CBD supplement or not, CBD is already at work in your system, helping to maintain the ideal state of homeostasis, which is the scientific term for “everything is just right”.

When we take CBD oil we’re merely supplementing the body’s natural supply of CBD, just as we do with vitamins, minerals, or anti-oxidants which are known to be beneficial for overall health and well-being. We’re not introducing foreign substances like opioids, synthetic anti-depressants, or manmade anti-anxiety pharmaceuticals.

While the FDA does regulate drugs, it does not regulate supplements, so you don’t need a prescription to begin a CBD regimen. This is a sword which cuts both ways for consumers though since anyone can jump into the unregulated CBD market. This makes it even more important for CBD consumers to do their due diligence and research to ensure that their CBD supplier is one they can trust.

CBD oil as a supplement can ensure that the endocannabinoid system is able to optimize the bio-communication processes between CBD receptors located in the limbic and paralimbic regions of the brain and the network of CBD receptors strategically located throughout the entire body.

For consumers seeking to “raise the CBD baseline” the task now is to make sure that they’re actually getting the CBD content they expect. Here at Bota Hemp, we are proud to say that a little CBD goes a long way, but cheap products such as hemp seed oil with minute trace levels of CBD are sure to disappoint at any price. Hemp seed oil has its own practical uses but if you’re looking for the beneficial properties of CBD listed below you need to understand the differences between hemp oil, CBD oil, and hemp seed oil. Scammers rely on this confusion to stay in business with slick labeling and marketing.

National Institute of Health Report to US Senate Caucus

Preliminary research conducted since the discovery of the endocannabinoid system in the 1990s has already highlighted the vast scope of CBD’s therapeutic potential, as this informative paper by the National Institute of Health for the National Institue on Drug Abuse reported to the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control in 2015. The NIH paper cites many of the therapeutic characteristics of CBD which has fueled its popularity with consumers including:

  • Anti-seizure effects especially in children with drug-resistant forms of epilepsy.
  • Neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects for managing neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinsons and Alzheimers, as well as stroke prevention and recovery.
  • Analgesic effects of CBD include management and relief of neuropathic pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer pain. CBD has grown immensely in popularity with professional athletes seeking a healthier, non-addictive alternative to dangerous opiates and addictive opioids.
  • Anti-tumor effects- Animal research has shown that CBD reduces cell viability, increases cancer cell death, decreases tumor growth, and inhibits metastasis. (the spread of cancer throughout the body).
  • Anti-psychotic effects- THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol in marijuana is known to induce psychosis in high doses and can increase the risk for chronic psychosis. CBD is known to reduce the psychoactive effects of marijuana and shows therapeutic potential for managing other forms of psychosis such as that which is induced by Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia.
  • Anti-anxiety effects- CBD’s effectiveness at reducing anxiety and stress is one of the properties which make it so popular with consumers. Many CBD users who begin a regimen to manage pain, or as an essential supplement for workouts and muscle recovery are happily surprised to find that they sleep better, have more confidence, stable moods, and an overall sense of well-being.

Working in harmony with the endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for regulating many important physical and mental biological processes such as sleep, mood, immune response, anti-anxiety, and pain management, CBD has quickly gained worldwide popularity as an essential supplement to enhance physical and mental well-being.

But let the buyer beware! To enjoy the many therapeutic benefits of CBD it’s vitally important to make sure that the product you are paying your hard-earned dollars for actually contains the purest high-quality CBD oil from hemp, without any of the harmful toxins or additives often found in bargain basement products. As we’ll see below, some products riding high on the golden reputation of CBD actually don’t contain any CBD at all.

Distinguishing the Best Quality CBD Products From the Bargain Bin Rip-offs

Check Out the Manufacturing Process

The CBD industry is still in its infancy which means that manufacturing processes are an unregulated Wild West world of processing and extraction shortcuts. This can affect the purity of the CBD oil, which is the end product you will be ingesting into your body.

Cheaply priced brands must use the cheapest methods of extraction in order to turn a profit at their ridiculously low prices. While they may be easy on the wallet they can actually be harmful to the consumer. These bargain basement brands may contain harmful toxins from inexpensive extraction processes which rely on solvents such as propane, hexane, pentane, and butane.

These are all toxic hydrocarbon compounds found in petroleum and even trace levels of these hazardous chemicals have no place in a supplement intended for human consumption. CBD oil which is extracted using these perilous solvents is as far from organic as it can get, and should be avoided at any price.

Supercritical CO2 Extraction at Bota Hemp

At Bota Hemp we use the most sophisticated method in the CBD oil industry to ensure the purity of the CBD oil in our extracted hemp products. In their article at, the Supercritical CO2 extraction method we use is cited as one of the top techniques for ensuring CBD purity throughout the entire extraction process.

Supercritical C02 extraction requires an extremely cold environment, and expensive, sophisticated equipment to deliver the required carbon dioxide at high pressure. It is also a much more complex refining process requiring a higher level of production expertise, but at Bota Hemp we simply do not compromise when it comes to the level of CBD product purity we offer to our customers.

That’s how we’ve earned the highest 5-star ratings in the top three categories for CBD quality at for purity (no added ingredients), extraction method, and independent lab testing. Any CBD company which can’t produce documentation verifying these three essentials of their product’s quality is a company which lacks the integrity to supply your CBD.

Growing Hemp: The Source of Your CBD Matters

Just as all CBD products aren’t created equal, the hemp crop source from which they are extracted can vary widely in quality. The hemp plant is a known hyperaccumulator, meaning that it is the perfect crop for absorbing heavy metals from contaminated soil. This is great news for revitalizing acreage for agriculture, but hemp grown in these conditions is most assuredly not suitable as a CBD source for human consumption.

As the confirms, low-quality hemp used by low-quality CBD suppliers can result in the presence of heavy metal toxins such as mercury or lead in the product. This risk goes up when profit-motivated manufacturers use cheaply imported hemp which isn’t subject to the high standards of US grown hemp. US farmers are required to be certified by state departments of agriculture.

Bota Hemp uses only US grown industrial hemp as the source for our pure CBD products.  Our hemp is grown right here in Colorado using the best organic methods, outdoors, in the mountain-fresh air under natural sunlight. We don’t force our crops to accelerate the harvesting cycle by bombarding it with artificial lighting 24 hours a day in a synthetically controlled laboratory environment. We understand that nature is the best hemp grower and we allow nature to take its time. Our hemp is GMO-free and pesticide free and is continuously tested to ensure that it meets are extremely high standards.

CBD on Amazon? The Difference Between Hemp Oil and Hemp Seed Oil

The first thing an informed consumer needs to know in order to arm themselves against the many hemp product scams on Amazon is that Amazon itself prohibits the sale of CBD rich products. If you’re looking for CBD you’re not going to find it on Amazon, despite the plethora of HEMP seed OIL style marketing which abounds on the site. Below is the prohibited list from the Amazon seller central guide.

The following cannabidiol (CBD) and Hemp products:

  • Rich Hemp Oil containing concentrated cannabidiol (CBD)
  • All non-ingestible products that contain cannabidiol/cannabinoid (CBD)
  • All ingestible products, including dietary supplements, that contain cannabidiol/cannabinoid (CBD)
  • Hemp products containing Resin or THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)
  • Hemp (or any cannabis Sativa L. strain) seeds capable of germination

This begs the question, “So why are there so many hemp oil products available on Amazon?” The answer is that the products use misleading labeling, conveniently leaving the word “seed” out of their product descriptions. Many of these products will claim that the “fatty acids” and high levels of mysterious “Omegas” in their bargain-priced hemp seed oil provide the same benefits that CBD has earned a reputation for. They’ll also use terms which apply to CBD such as “full spectrum” or “hemp extract”.

Sadly, many of these hemp seed oil suppliers are aware that a ridiculously low price is a red flag for wary consumers and they solve that problem by charging prices which are comparable to genuine CBD oil products. The best practice here is to apply the “Let the buyer beware!” rule, and bear in mind Amazon’s own policy banning the sale of any product containing concentrated CBD.

Why Does Whole Plant and Full Spectrum CBD Oil Make the Best Quality CBD Products?

There is a trend right now, promoted primarily by the Big Pharmaceutical industry (who will profit most from it with a new synthetically derived CBD pill) toward products known as “CBD isolates”. While the term may give the impression that a CBD isolate provides a purer form of CBD, it is actually a slick method for marketing a product which is cheaper to make, using just a single part of the hemp plant. It also ignores the synergetic, or “entourage effect” which makes the whole hemp plant so therapeutically beneficial.

The Entourage Effect

The entourage effect defines how CBD’s therapeutic properties are enhanced as it works in synergy with the 100 other cannabinoids found in the hemp plant as a whole. “Synergy” is just a fancy way for scientists to say “works well together”. Full spectrum CBD oil also contains nine essential amino acids, vitamins A, C, and E, and an assortment of beneficial minerals and proteins. When it comes to the isolate verses whole plant or full spectrum method of delivering CBD there is no question about it. Full spectrum CBD is better for making the best quality CBD products.

When CBD molecules combine with other phytocannabinoids found in the whole hemp plant it has been shown to maintain its effectiveness over longer periods of time. This is why we’re able to say that “A little CBD goes a long way.”

The same can’t be said for CBD acting as a single lonely molecule as it does with CBD isolates. Of course, for CBD isolate suppliers this works in their favor since a consumer would have to ingest more of their inferior product to equal the results provided by taking lower doses of superior whole plant or “full spectrum” products. Isn’t that convenient for those CBD isolate manufacturers looking to sell vast quantities?

THC in CBD Oil? Check the Label

CBD oil may be extracted from thousands of hemp plants at once during the manufacturing process. The primary reason for using hemp instead of marijuana as the CBD source is hemp’s inherently low trace levels of THC, but combining thousands of trace levels can add up. Suppliers who cut corners in the extraction process, usually by avoiding the investment in the expensive equipment required for proper processing, can end up with a product high in THC content.

It’s important to check the label. Any reputable CBD product should contain less than .3% THC, as do all of the best quality CBD products here at Bota Hemp. You’ll notice that we proudly state that all Bota Hemp products produce zero high.

The Best Quality CBD Products Must Be Third-Party Lab Tested

In the wide-open CBD market, any supplier can make any claim and consumers need to go beyond the claims on labels and in sales pitches to verify that the CBD product they will be ingesting is of the purest quality and actually contains the level of CBD they are paying for. Third-party lab testing ensures that the product measures up to the claims.

Third-party labs operate independently and have no financial stake in the company for whom they perform the testing. Any reputable CBD supplier will be willing to submit his products to third-party testing to earn the trust of his customers.

The rigorous quality control testing confirms actual CBD content, ensures low THC levels remain below .3% and verifies that no impurities have found their way into the product before it ships to the consumer. Without third-party lab testing, neither the supplier or the consumer have any way of verifying product quality.

You’ll notice that Bota Hemp prominently posts our third-party lab testing compliance right up top on our homepage.
